Meet our Independent Judges for Wigan Borough Business Awards 2026

Now that the finalists for Wigan Borough Business Awards 2026 have been announced, we’d like to take the opportunity to recognise the people who made those difficult decisions possible.

Behind every finalist is a rigorous and independent judging process, carried out by a panel of experienced professionals who have generously volunteered their time to ensure every entry received the fair consideration it deserved.

Over recent weeks, our judges have dedicated hundreds of hours to reviewing applications, scoring submissions and interviewing shortlisted businesses, organisations and individuals. With an exceptional standard of entries across all 13 categories, selecting just 53 finalists was no easy task.

The judges were consistently impressed by the quality of entries received this year. From ambitious start-ups and established businesses to charities, social enterprises and inspiring individuals, every category demonstrated the talent, innovation and positive impact that exists across Wigan Borough.

Wigan Borough Business Awards are built on a judging process that is fair, transparent and independent. Each entry is assessed against a consistent set of criteria before being independently scored by the judging panel. Shortlisted entrants are then invited to interview, giving them the opportunity to expand on their submission and answer questions from the judges. This process ensures every finalist has earned their place through merit, making reaching the final a significant achievement in itself.

Our judges give their time voluntarily because they believe in recognising and celebrating the achievements of businesses, organisations and individuals across Wigan Borough. Their professionalism, expertise and integrity are fundamental to the credibility of the awards, and we are incredibly grateful for the commitment they have shown throughout this year’s judging process.

  • Steve Critchley – Former Business Owner & Entrepreneur

  • Andrea Glasspell – Assistant Director, Wigan Council

  • Andy Traynor – Retired Senior Investment Executive

  • Angela Holmes – President, Soroptimist International Swallows

Together, they have brought a wealth of experience, insight and independent expertise to this year’s awards, helping ensure every entry was considered carefully and fairly. To everyone who entered the Wigan Borough Business Awards 2026, thank you for taking the time to share your achievements with us.

Congratulations to this year’s 53 finalists. Reaching this stage is an achievement to be incredibly proud of, and we look forward to celebrating with you at the WBBA Finalists Celebration, kindly hosted by the GM Business Growth Hub on Tuesday 15th September, before the winners are revealed at the Wigan Borough Business Awards on Saturday 26th September.

Finally, to our judges, thank you. Wigan Borough Business Awards simply wouldn’t be possible without your dedication, professionalism and support.
